My Favorite Dark Paint Colors
If you’ve been following me on the socials, you’ve seen me post designs with the use of dark moody colors. Let’s just say dark colors are popping up everywhere right now in all thing’s interior designs. I remember back in the earlier 2000’s dark colors were normally used as accent colors on a wall or a section of a room, but today, designers are loving it, and some have gotten bold with the use of wall-to-wall dark color that exudes so much sophistication and drama.
I’ve gathered up some of my favorite dark interiors sharing all the best paint colors to use for the look, inspiring you to join in and let’s darken the mood on your next design project, friends.
MY FAVORITE DARK PAINT COLORS
BLACK AND CHARCOAL
We’re starting off with the boldest and darkest of the colors that will deliver some serious drama to a space if you’re feeling brave. Down Pipe by Farrow & Ball continues to be a designer favorite (as seen in the image above), but if you want to take things a step further, I’d recommend Iron Ore by Sherwin-Williams in a heartbeat. I’ve just used this in my Weatherbrook Project, and I love how it completely transformed the home.

MY FAVORITE DARK PAINT COLORS
CHOCOLATE BROWN
If you want to warm things up and give you a cozy vibe Chocolate brown is the perfect dark color. It also mixes and matches well with just about everything. I’m actually drawn to browns in most of my designs since it creates a tone in a room to be more classic and timeless. Personally, I’m considering Townsend Harbor Brown by Benjamin Moore for my master bedroom remodel that I’m currently working on, it has the perfect burgundy-like undertones that I’m looking for.
MY FAVORITE DARK PAINT COLORS
OLIVE AND SAGE
If I haven’t mentioned it before, Green and any color that has green hues is my all-time favorite color. I still remember when I purchased my first home, I painted my family room walls a dark olive green which complimented the honey oak kitchen cabinets at that time, but these days Night Watch by Sherwin Williams has caught my full attention. I’ve not only used it on my Wagon Trail Project but just the other day I made a recommendation to a friend to also use that color for her mudroom. The olive hue can act as a neutral color to a space and still deliver that moody drama vibe that you may be craving for.

MY FAVORITE DARK PAINT COLORS
DEEP BLUE
Whenever I want to create a statement to a room, I always like using dark blues. I’ve used it as accent walls in a guest bedroom, entry way 10’ ceiling and on a glass panel front door for the perfect entrance statement to a home. If you are more drawn to the color blue then I would recommend Gale Force by Sherwin-Williams or Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball. They’re both deep, dark blues that really help anchor a space, and look incredible next to a wide variety of wood tones.

MY FAVORITE DARK PAINT COLORS
BERRY AND PLUM
The current trend is the use of dark shades of berry and plum on wall-to-wall and ceiling in a room and I must tell you that I’m in love with this. It might be because it makes me feel like I’m walking inside a European castle from a scene out of Bridgeton. This year you will be seeing more of these colors being used for interiors and you may just learn to fall in love with it too. For a super dark and moody look, Camelot by Benjamin Moore is a winner, while Muskoka Dusk by Benjamin Moore also gives a moody vibe without the full commitment.
Now that I’ve inspired you to darken the mood this season, which dark paint color will you be brave enough to use on your next project?
